The Knight Riders Group, owners of CPL franchise TKR, will set up the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders for the UAE’s new flagship T20 league.
According to a media release, the group has acquired the rights to own and operate the Abu Dhabi franchise.
The UAE’s T20 tournament will involve six teams playing 34 matches.
ESPNcricinfo reports that the competition was originally meant to be played in the February-March bracket.
However, despite the delay, the Emirates Cricket Board remains confident it will host the inaugural edition of the league in 2022.
The Abu Dhabi acquisition marks the fourth T20 franchise for the Knight Riders Group with the others being Kolkata Knight Riders, Trinbago Knight Riders and a stake in the USA’s project Major League Cricket.
Speaking about the move, Group co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan says, “For several years now, we have been expanding the Knight Riders brand globally and closely watching the potential for T20 cricket in the UAE. We are excited about becoming part of UAE’s T20 League, which no doubt will become hugely successful.”
