‘ICC World T20’ renamed to ‘ICC T20 World Cup’

The ICC World T20 has been renamed as the ICC T20 World Cup, and the name will take effect for the Men’s and Women’s edition of the tournament in 2020.

According to the ICC, the renaming decision is aligned to the Global Cricket Strategy, which will be launched in early 2019.

Under this strategy, the shortest format will not only be used to globalize the game, but to also enhance its profile and status.

The ICC Board had already approved that all T20s between its Members will be granted T20I status.

It then introduced a regional qualification process that provides a pathway to all its 104 Members with an opportunity to play and win the World Cup.

A number of team captains have welcomed the new name, including South Africa’s Faf du Plessis who also said that the 2020 event will probably be his last ICC event after the World Cup in 2019.
