Zoological Society welcomes capybara ‘vermin’ designation

The Zoological Society of T&T is pleased with the recent designation of the capybara as a vermin, under the Conservation of Wildlife Act.

President Gupte Lutchmedial says the Zoo supported this on evidence based on over seven years of surveillance done on the distribution and activities of the capybara in the country.

There were complaints from farmers that these creatures were destroying their crops.

The Zoological Society was able to verify that the farmers were experiencing losses from the capybara where they were present.

Mr. Lutchmedial says this designation as vermin allows control of the animal only on private lands where farmers are being affected, but protection on all other lands so that there is balance.
