Zoo calls for relocation of Independence fireworks

The Emperor Valley Zoo is suggesting that the Independence fireworks be moved from the Queens Park Savannah to a barge off the Mucurapo Foreshore.

It follows complaints by the Zoo of the loud noise it generates, which affects the animals at the facility.

Zoo officials also say they received hundreds of calls and messages from residents of Chancellor Hill and Belmont, who expressed how they were also negatively affected by the noise.

The Zoo says following the colorful explosions, all animals there have settled and returned to normal behavior, compared to what they exhibited that night and the following days.

It says if the suggestion for a location change is impossible, then it says silent fireworks should be used for the Independence celebrations.

Surely, it adds, there is a safer way to celebrate without affecting both citizens and animals.
