Virologist on the “Brazilian Variant” of COVID-19

There are concerns regarding the so-called “Brazilian variant” of COVID-19, known as P1, which has been detected in T&T.

The P1 variant bears mutations in the spike region of the virus which is used to enter and infect cells.

During today’s Health Briefing, Virologist Dr Christine Carrington gave some more information as to what the mutation means with regard to this variant.

Dr Carrington also referred to a recent study, which shows that some current vaccines may still be effective against the P1 Variant.

There is still much to be learned about the variant however, and persons are urged to remain vigilant.
