Venezuelan immigrants return, detained by police


    Police have detained 27 illegal Venezuelan immigrants were returned to Trinidad today after being repatriated over the weekend.

    According to the TTPS, the persons were initially detained on November 17th and were part of a group of 29 individuals sent back to Venezuela on November 22nd.

    Between 1:30pm and 2:15pm today, police received information that a number of Venezuelans were seen coming off a boat at Los Iros Beach.

    Responding officers met 11 adults and 16 children (between the ages of 4 months to 17 years) at the scene.

    A number of media personnel were also already at the location.

    The 27 persons were detained and were taken to the Siparia Health Facility to be medically examined.

    The Venezuelan immigrants also reportedly informed police that there was a court order for them to return to Trinidad.

    Police are currently conducting interviews.

    On Sunday, Justice Avason Quinlan-Williams reportedly ordered the group’s return, after a writ of habeas corpus was filed on their behalf.
