Former Minister Vasant Bharath is questioning the decision to curb opening hours for bars.
Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Bharath referred to the move as a “bewildering policy decision”.
He points out that the measure was introduced after certain bars last weekend reportedly flouted medical guidelines.
He adds that police prosecution of errant bar owners is a simple and obvious response to the breach of regulations.
Mr Bharath believes the authorities should insist upon compliance with the law instead of “shutting down legitimate businesses.”
He is now calling on the Government to hold meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, in order to arrive at a fair and sensible solution to the issue of overcrowding at public bars.
