Parliament’s Privileges Committee is meeting today to hear allegations that UNC MP Dr Roodal Moonilal committed contempt of the House in October last year.
According to a Newsday report, Dr Moonilal will try to get an injunction to stop that meeting, with his application to be heard in the San Fernando High Court today.
The MP is reportedly arguing that the committee is not properly constituted and biased, so any hearing against him would be illegal and can cause serious damage to him.
Dr Moonilal was referred to the committee on November 2nd 2018, after House Speaker Bridgid Annisette-George ruled a strong case had been made out.
The grounds to be considered by the committee are that he willfully and intentionally misled the House; that he made injurious allegations against the member of Diego Martin West when no substantive motion was before the House; and that he undermined the dignity of the House by abusing the privilege of freedom of speech.
