The Opposition UNC says the Government must take steps to prevent any possible food crisis in T&T.
This, after reports that a major local food distributor warned that if foreign exchange woes continue there could soon be a 35 per cent hike for foods.
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has again called for the expansion of the list of basket items that are exempted from VAT to include more food items in the short term.
She says while this PNM administration reduced the VAT from 15% to 12.5%, but at the same time, they reduced the number of items that were once exempted from the tax.
In addition, she questioned the $500 million investment into agriculture from the last budget, stating they are yet to see anything concrete from that allocation.
The UNC leader says Government must place more investment in our domestic food production capacity to prevent a possible food crisis.
