Two held after police find boatload of goods including 51 buckets of cheese

Cigars (left) and buckets of white cheese seized from the vessel in Icacos

A boat captain and a fisherman are in police custody after officers seized goods from a vessel off the coast of Icacos Bay.

Around 8:10am yesterday, while on air patrol, Air Guard officers called the TTPS to report the fishing pirogue heading inland at high speed.

They said that the vessel ran ashore and three men jumped out and ran into a nearby coconut estate.

Police responded and, while at the scene, two men returned to the boat and surrendered to police.

A search of the vessel uncovered 51 buckets of white cheese, 22 rolls of sausage, 13 bags of cassava bread and four boxes of 200 cigars.

The suspects, both of Icacos, were arrested for possession of what police have called “uncustomed goods.”

The items and the boat were handed over to the Customs and Excise Division.
