It’s not a matter of if the Omicron COVID-19 variant gets to T&T but when, according to UWI Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology, Christine Carrington.

She was speaking at this morning’s Health Ministry media briefing when she made her statement about the latest variant of COVID.

She believes, if the variant moves around quicker as forecast, T&T would be vulnerable.

Professor Carrington also said that vaccines can help, not just deal with the virus at hand, but to prevent further variants.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said government will be monitoring the spread of Omicron and would update their travel restrictions as needed.

He also said that persons coming in from the eight restricted African countries will have to pay for quarantine.

Also at the briefing, it was revealed that T&T has, in total, recorded 276 cases of the Delta variant.
