Top Cop: There’s little deterrent for aiding illegal entry into T&T

There is little deterrent for aiding the entry of Venezuelans into T&T illegally, according to the Police Commissioner.

In a media release, Mr Gary Griffith notes that recently, 24 illegal immigrants were simply reprimanded and discharged by the court, instead of being fined or imprisoned.

Furthermore, he says that 12 persons were convicted of aiding and abetting the arrival of Venezuelans through illegal ports but were each fined $1,500 although they could have been fined up to $50,000.

Mr Griffith believes every facet of the law must act robustly to enforce laws, especially in light of the sharp increase in the number of persons infected with COVID-19.
