Police disperse crowds at vaccination sites

Persons gathered in Chaguanas hoping to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Police officers had to disperse thousands of people who had assembled outside Health Centers this morning seeking a COVID-19 vaccination.

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith says persons, many of them elderly, had begun assembling outside the vaccination sites around 6am.

By 9am, he says videos and photos revealed crowds and long lines with absolutely no social distancing, in areas such as Diego Martin, Carenage, Chaguanas, Ste Madeline, La Horquetta, and Arima.

Commissioner Griffith says he immediately gave instructions that officers take charge of the situation in the various Divisions, and if it became necessary, to shut down these sites for the day.

Officers reportedly swung into action and dispersed the large crowds in various areas.

The Top Cop says he will be meeting with Health officials today to ensure that a better system is put in place for the vaccine rollout in the future.
