Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is urging the Afro-Trinidadian population to use Emancipation to make a commitment, to focus on being the best they can be.
He made the call during Emancipation Celebrations at the Diplomatic Center yesterday.
Dr Rowley lamented the harsh legacy of slavery, which he believes lingers in society today.
He says the country needs to confront the reality that “in a diverse society aiming to do well, that African people are not doing as well as we expected or as well as we might”.
The following video contains Dr Rowley’s full address.
In our nation today we need to confront a reality that we cannot run away from. In a diverse society African people are not doing as well as we would have wanted or expected. The time has come for the Afro-Trinidadian population to use Emancipation to focus and reflect on where we are as a nation and why we are underperforming.
