PM on the challenges of vaccine acquisition

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has responded to criticism from an Opposition MP, who called on the Government to request vaccines from India.

Speaking during today’s Health Ministry briefing, Dr Rowley said such a request was made recently by Barbados and Dominica following increases in their local cases.

He adds that T&T did not follow suit, since a policy decision was taken to only use vaccines with WHO approval.

Dr Rowley also claimed that some companies are unwilling to take “small orders”, making vaccine acquisition difficult for smaller countries.

The Prime Minister also outlined concerns with the COVAX Facility.

T&T contributed to and is part of the COVAX Facility, which will ensure doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The country’s first batch through this arrangement is due to arrive next month.

It was previously stated as well that talks will be held directly with vaccine manufacturers.
