PM addresses COP26

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says his Government has set very ambitious targets aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing carbon emissions.

Speaking today at the World Leaders Summit on Climate Change in Glasgow, Scotland, he said the measures include the establishment of the largest utility-scale solar renewable energy project in the Caribbean.

He says this is currently underway, and will have a capacity of 112 megawatts, accounting for 10% of power needs, and will be increased to 30% by 2030.

He says Government has also developed a Just Transition of the Workforce Policy aimed at reskilling, retooling and developing new capacity for a low-carbon economy; and is pursuing measures to facilitate investment in green hydrogen to provide green feedstock to the petrochemical industry.

He adds however that financing for projects are a challenge for smaller countries dealing with the impact of climate change, and welcomed the announcement by the US that it would double its climate finance support.
