Following the deadly fire at Guyana’s Mahdia Secondary School this week, the Opposition Leader is calling for safety assessments and upgrades for T&T schools.

Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in a media release, says T&T must learn from tragedies such as the fire which killed 19 children.

She is calling on the state to conduct fire safety assessments at all schools, upgrade schools to meet fire and security standards, train staff to handle emergencies until protective services arrive and practice evacuation drills at least twice per term.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar believes similar measures are also need at children’s homes, juvenile detention facilities and homes for the aged.

She is also calling on citizens to develop their own personal safety procedures for homes and businesses.
