Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the disaster in South Trinidad has been ignored by the Government.

She says no mention was made of it at yesterday’s post-Cabinet conference, indicating that Cabinet did not consider the plight of people in those communities.

“I remind the Prime Minister that he is not Prime Minister of PNM constituencies alone – he is duty-bound to protect citizens and prevent disasters such as this from occurring,” the Opposition Leader said.  “These people continue to suffer as a result of Keith Rowley’s incompetence and inability to govern.”

She says the UNC is calling on the Government to do their jobs – take immediate steps to provide assistance to flood victims and implement a workable plan to address the problem of perennial flooding in the country.

“I call on the Prime Minister to come down to these places – Barrackpore, Debe, Penal and witness the extent of this flooding crisis,” she said.  “Don’t just come down when you want to beg for votes – come and help the people!”

This morning, Ministers Kazim Hosein and Rohan Sinanan were deployed to the flood-affected areas to assist and report back to Cabinet on their findings.

This Office of the PM says this report will determine what further assistance will be provided to residents in South Trinidad who have been severely impacted by flooding.
