ODPM to test National Alert System via SMS text

The 2021 Hurricane Season is off to a relatively quiet start, as there are currently no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.

The season runs from today to November 30th.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US has predicted an ‘above average’ season with 13 to 20 total named storms.

Meanwhile in T&T, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management will today test its National Alert System by sending a text message to mobile phones locally.

Persons with either bMobile or a Digicel phone will receive an SMS text message, and the ODPM is asking persons to let them know via social media their general location and when they received the message.

It says the responses will enable officials to estimate how long it will take to communicate with the public in an emergency.
