Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says he cannot say if the first confirmed case of the P1 (Brazilian) variant of COVID-19 was a legal or illegal migrant.

During yesterday’s sitting of the Senate, Mr Deyalsingh revealed only that the person was a Venezuelan.

Since then, many have expressed concerns about border control, including the Opposition.

Mr Deyalsingh however insists that the person’s legal status cannot be determined by his Ministry.

Thus far, nine cases of the P1 variant have been confirmed in T&T.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram explained how samples are being referred for genetic sequencing to detect this and other variants.
