MP: Society must do more to protect women from violence

    Fyzabad MP, Dr. Lackram Bodoe.

Citizens are being urged to do their part to help curb violence against women.

In a statement for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe says too many women in T&T continue to be victims of violence.

He believes the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns and state of emergency created tension and conflict in certain domestic spaces.

Dr Bodoe says despite the creation of a gender-based violence unit in the TTPS and the passage of laws allowing the use of electronic bracelets, women continue to experience violence and death.

He wants society to do more to address the issue, including deeper engagement at the primary school level, further strengthening of the Domestic Violence Act and the adequate resourcing of civil society bodies involved in attempting to curb the problem.
