MP renews call for comprehensive refugee policy

A recently appointed Joint Select Committee on Foreign Affairs is being urged to help government develop a comprehensive refugee policy.

This call comes from UNC MP Rodney Charles who says the policy should be humane, consistent with laws and treaty obligations and recognizes the country’s absorptive capacity.

He says, with this, NGOs, coast guard, police, immigration, parliament and citizens will know what is required in situations such as the alleged deportation of 16 persons Venezuelans recently.

Mr Charles is also urging government to use critical hard data to inform the policy and another policy to lock down borders.
