The Opposition UNC has condemned the Government’s move to block debate on a Private Member’s Bill, “The Sedition Repeal Bill, 2019”.

During yesterday’s sitting of the Lower House, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar made her case for the debate.

However it was vehemently opposed by the Government, with MP Fitzgerald Hinds calling the motion “irresponsible and reckless”.

In the end, the House voted to reject the Motion.

In a subsequent release the UNC insisted that the motion was based on current public sentiment and was needed since the Sedition Act is unconstitutional, in breach of fundamental rights and should be repealed.

It also accused the Government of failing to address the concerns of citizens.
