Ministry unable to take action against geriatric homes

Government has no authority to take action against geriatric homes where elderly abuse takes place, until the ‘Homes for Older Persons Act’ is proclaimed in June next year.

Social Development Minister Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn says in the last year, 30 geriatric homes and 40 private residences were investigated by the Ministry.

In some cases she says, action was taken to remove some persons, and other cases were either reported to the police or resolved.
