Minister: There’s no policy to give state media exclusive access

Communications Minister Symon de Nobriga insists there is no policy that provides state-owned media preferred or exclusive access to events.

A report has been circulating which says the Minister himself confirmed that TTT was being granted unfettered access on assignments while blocking access to other media.

The report also claims that two media houses were blocked from entering the cruise ship complex to cover a recent Venezuelan repatriation exercise.

UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar responded by saying such a policy is tantamount to state censorship of independent media.

However, in a release issued this morning, Minister de Nobriga says the report took seriously a statement that he made “lightheartedly and supposedly off the record”.

Instead, he claimed that given the large numbers, only TTT and the Information Division were given access to the event.

He added that officials were instructed to provide footage to all media houses who requested it.
