The Minister of Social Development yesterday visited a Home for the Aged in Diego Martin after recent complaints of neglect, which has been seen in a video gone viral online.
The Ministry says it was informed that a call was made to police by a concerned neighbor, who said she had not seen a worker for a few days and a male resident was asking for help.
The resident, who identified himself as Mr. Wajid Ali-Dookie, indicated that he had not eaten and was left alone most of the time. Wajid-Ali further shared that there were two other persons at the Home: a bedridden female and a female in a wheelchair.
Minister Donna Cox says the Division of Ageing is investigating the matter, and her visit was a fact finding mission, since the Ministry has a mandate to craft legislation and policy on how Senior Citizens are treated.
The Ministry is also at present, engaged in developing the Home for Older Persons Legislation, which will help to monitor, control and regulate such places.
She says the Division will continue to work with the Diego Martin Home in question towards regularization to ensure that the elderly receive the adequate care and protection they deserve.
