Minister calls for “reasonable” adjustments to prices

Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon is calling on retailers and other businesses to be reasonable in their adjustments following an increase in the price of flour.

She made the call today following some reports of hefty markups.

When asked about price control as a way to protect against price gouging, Mrs. Gopee-Scoon insisted that this may not be necessary.

The Minister also insisted that measures such as a subsidy for flour aren’t necessarily suitable, given certain complexities.

Mrs. Gopee-Scoon says Government is actively examining options on how to mitigate the impact of the increase on citizens, and is hoping to report back in under two weeks.

The Minister was speaking during today’s post-cabinet news conference.
