CSO data shows that the T&T economy defied forecasts and grew in the first quarter of 2022, according to the Finance Minister.

According to Minister Colm Imbert, the CSO previously estimated that real GDP would decline by 0.1%.

However, he says the economy actually grew by 1.6% in that quarter and GDP grew by 6.6% in the second quarter of 2022.

Mr Imbert says for the first half of 2022, according to the CSO, GDP grew by 4.1% – almost twice the growth figure previously estimated.

He believes this is proof that the economy is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and that diversification efforts are bearing fruit.
