Garcia: Some school boards discriminated against parents

Discrimination by some denominational boards is one of the reasons behind new standardized registration forms for children entering 1st Year.

Earlier this month, the Education Ministry announced the new forms which it says are aimed at reducing the long lines seen outside schools of parents desperate to register their child.

The documents outline the guidelines schools must follow when considering a child.

However, Minister Anthony Garcia says another unfortunate reality was the level of bias some parents had to endure.

Among the guidelines of the new form are:
    • When places are limited, priority must be given to children who live within 3km of the school
    • Students who have siblings in the same school should also be given preference
