Financial Intelligence Unit warns of ‘Romance Scam’

The Financial Intelligence Unit of the Finance Ministry is warning persons to be wary of a ‘Romance Scam’.

It says victims are usually at a vulnerable stage in life, and are usually being targeted on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, or via text and phone calls.

Once communication is established the FIU says the perpetrators go on to request money under the guise of “clearing packages”.

When payments are made, the scammer or a co-conspirator makes ATM or in-branch withdrawls, after when they may continue to exploit that victim or target a new person.
