Finance Minister announces financial support for workers, small businesses

Income Support Grants and Salary Relief Grants will be given for the month of May 2021.

These will either be $1,000 or $1,500 depending on when a person’s income would have been disrupted or lost.

The announcement came this afternoon from Finance Minister Colm Imbert.

He adds that forms to apply for these grants should be available online in the next few days

Like last year, the Income Support Grant will be overseen by the Social Development Ministry for persons outside the NIS system, while the Salary Relief Grant will be handled by the Finance Ministry, and cater to those in the NIS system.

About 20,000 persons are expected to be eligible, with the initiative estimated to cost between $25m to $30m.

Mr Imbert meanwhile says the Agriculture Ministry has also begun distributing food baskets containing local produce and two chickens.

Mr Imbert said the aim is to distribute 25,000 food baskets in May, June and July, and possibly for August and September, “once it works out”.

He noted as well that the Agriculture Ministry will work with local farmers, so that they are aware of the initiative and would work to supply it.

Support will also be available for small businesses.
