199 non-academic staff of the University of T&T have received termination letters, and Education Minister Anthony Garcia says it is the only hope for the institution.
He says while it is a traumatic experience, it was the only way UTT could survive, given the financial constraints.
This is expected to save UTT $2 million monthly.
Meanwhile, former Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim describes the action, mere days before the start of the new school year, as heartless and wicked.
He lamented that the Government and Board of Governors have failed to manage the affairs of UTT.
In four years, nearly 500 UTT staff has been cut.
