Variety: Wonder Woman 1984 ropes in biggest opening weekend of COVID era

Despite mixed reviews for ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, the sequel to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ has debuted with “the biggest opening weekend haul in the coronavirus era” in the US.

This is according to Variety magazine which quotes a figure of US$16.7m as the film’s ticket sales.

While, the original Wonder Woman made more than $100m at its opening, the sequel’s takings are still exceeding box office projections.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, the film sees actress Gal Gadot return as Wonder Woman in the 1980s.

Reviews have been mixed for the film – Rotten Tomatoes has given a 65% rating (much less than the 93% given to the 2017 film) and IMDb has given it a 5.8, while some fans have praised the film.

A decision has already been taken to “fast track development” on the third and final installment of the franchise with Jenkins and Gadot both returning.
