The first ever Soca Monarch in Europe was held in London on Friday.
This event brought together artistes from all over Europe, some of whom have Caribbean roots, showcasing their craft to be crowned the first ever King or Queen of Soca.
Twelve competitors participated in the event dubbed the Europe United Kingdom Soca Monarch (EUKSM), and saw Vincentian Soca artiste Wetty Beatz who represented France, taking the top spot.
His song was entitled ‘Sye Pa Mele’ and Beatz walked away with a trophy and a cheque of £1500.
Phillip Bastien known as ‘Wetty Beatz’ is an international record producer and artiste, who was instrumental in the takeoff of the music genre Afro-Soca that combines the pulse and sounds of African music with notorious Soca vibes.
He was born and raised on the tiny Union Island, located within St Vincent & the Grenadines.
Wetty is also known to have worked with several Caribbean artistes on collaborations with Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, Busy Signal, Fayann Lyons and Olatunji.
