“Ponniyin Selvan” takes the Indian box office by storm

Mani Ratnam’s new film “Ponniyin Selvan:1” has taken the Indian box office by storm.

The Tamil-language film is an epic period drama, based on one of India’s greatest emperors: Rajaraja Chola – who was not the first of the Chola dynasty but took their empire from a relatively small kingdom to the dominant empire in India.

Ponniyin Selvan was the name given to him by loyal subjects.

“Ponniyin Selvan:1” is first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 book “Ponniyin Selvan”, which is widely considered to be the finest novel ever written in Tamil.

The film stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha.

According to BBC News, in addition to very good ticket sales, fans have even formed groups to travel across the former kingdoms and villages ruled by the Cholas as mentioned in the novel.

The second part of the film is due for release next year.
