Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Mulan” will be released on Disney Plus on September 4th for $29.99.
The fee will be in addition to the $6.99 subscriber fee for Disney Plus customers.
The company reportedly told Insider that the $30 acts as a purchase — as long as people subscribe to Disney Plus, they’ll be able to access the film.
In countries where Disney Plus is not available, Disney is releasing Mulan in theaters on the same date.
The move comes as Disney reevaluates the release of projects in light of COVID-19.
For now, Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek says the move isn’t reflective of a new business model for the company: “We’re looking at ‘Mulan’ as a one-off as opposed to saying there’s some new business windowing model that we’re looking at.”
“Mulan” has faced a bumpy road to release – the film was originally supposed to hit theatres on March 27th, got pushed to July 24th, and was delayed again to August 21st.
Then, last month, it was put in limbo after being pulled from the schedule.
