ABC’s talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ has been fined US$395,000 for mimicking a presidential alert on the programme in October 3rd last year.
The show replicated the alert tone three times, which is illegal, during a sketch mocking the warning system.
The alert was officially tested nationwide on the same day that ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ was aired.
That alert included more than 200 million US mobile phones receiving a test “Presidential Alert” notification.
This is designed to warn of major threats such as missile attacks, natural disasters and acts of terrorism and is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema).
ABC has since admitted to broadcasting the alert on 3rd October 2018, but said it did so under the impression that “use of the tone was permissible”.
In the event of a national emergency, US President Donald Trump would be in charge of ordering the agency to activate the warning system.
