The EMA is yet to identify the source of an oily substance which has impacted part of the Caroni Swamp.

In a media release at 12pm today, the Authority made its first official statement on the incident.

It said it was informed of the spill around 5pm yesterday and informed the ODPM, IMA and the Energy Ministry, following which clean-up began.

The estimated amount of the oily material is three barrels and a sample has been handed over to the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA).

The EMA said further assessments are being done today to see where else have been affected and whether any of the substance has entered the Gulf of Paria.

Further recovery and clean-up works will also be conducted.
