Diabetes and COVID the “perfect storm” according to health advisor

Since the 1960s, diabetes has moved from being the 7th leading cause of death to the 2nd leading cause in T&T.

This is according to Health Advisor Dr Rohit Doon, while speaking at the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 briefing this morning.

He blamed a diet high in processed food and beverages for the continued rise in prevalence of the disease.

Dr Doon says when the impact of diabetes is coupled with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, a perfect storm ensues.

Dr Doon estimates that around 22% of T&T population has diabetes.
