The Delta COVID-19 variant is projected to be dominant strain in Europe by September 2021 and worldwide by end of 2021.
This assessment is contained in CARPHA’s latest situation report, dated July 19th 2021.
It says worldwide, the variant has been found in at least 111 countries in all six WHO regions.
Regionally, it has been detected in nine Caribbean countries.
With regard to overall COVID-19 statistics, CARPHA says the region’s total confirmed cases were 1,060,565 in 35 countries/territories.
The new total reportedly represents a 2% increase in the number of confirmed cases.
There were also 13,906 deaths recorded in the Caribbean Region as of July 19th 2021.
CARPHA says the risk of further cases occurring in the Caribbean remains Very High, adding that countries must continue to focus on interrupting viral transmission and reducing mortality associated with the virus.
