The T&T Cancer Society is distancing itself from a statement by another group on the appointment of Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards to the board of Angostura Limited.
Cancer Society is part of the T&T Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance which, according to a newspaper article, called on Principal Medical Officer Dr Richards to reconsider joining the board.
It reportedly said that being on the board of an alcohol company cannot be reconciled with her role as a health official.
However, the Cancer Society says it was not consulted on the statement before its publishing.
It furthermore says that while it recognises the risk factor of excessive alcohol intake, it remains committed to advocating for people to make healthier lifestyle choices.
