Bridgid Annisette-George has been sworn-in as Speaker of the House of Representatives, despite objections from the Opposition.

Yesterday a letter was written by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar to Parliament, expressing disapproval of Mrs Annisette-George in the position.

Today, at the opening of Parliament, the Government nominated Mrs Annisette-George for the position while the Opposition nominated Nafeesa Mohammed.

The matter then went to a vote.

Mrs Annisette-George was selected by a margin of 21 votes for, and 19 against.

Esmond Forde was named as Deputy House Speaker with no other nominees put forward, while Christine Kangaloo is again Senate President and Nigel De Freitas is Senate Vice-President.

Shortly afterward, Government Minister Camille Robinson-Regis defended their selection for House Speaker
