Scientists in South Africa are now studying a variant of the coronavirus, according to an article by Bloomberg.
In its report, the media outlet says there are fears the country may face a potentially severe fourth wave that could spread internationally.
The variant is being called B.1.1529 until a Greek letter is assigned.
Bloomberg quotes bio-informatics professor Tulio de Oliveira as saying that this variant is “clearly very different” from previous incarnations.
The article also notes that it carries an “unusually large number of mutations” and that the WHO has met to discuss it.
So far, almost 100 cases linked to the variant have been recorded by virologists in South Africa.
