The Bahamas and Florida are bracing for Hurricane Dorian, which is forecast to continue strengthening as it moves towards the chain of islands.

The National Hurricane Centre says Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday, and may remain extremely dangerous through the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are currently 140 km/h with higher gusts, meaning it is still a Category 1 hurricane.

It will move to Category 2 status when winds reach 154km/h.

Dorian is currently moving northwest, however by Friday it is forecast to begin turning west-northwestward.

On this track, Dorian should move over the Atlantic east of the southeastern and central Bahamas today and move near or over portions of the northwest Bahamas on Sunday.

It could then hit the US states of Florida or even southern Georgia, and according to CNN, it could be at Category 3 by that time.

No Warnings or Watches have yet been issued for any territories at this time.
