Animal Welfare Act hailed as “international standard” law

The Zoological Society says the Animal Welfare Act, which took effect yesterday, is now of international standard.

In a media release, the society says it participated in the process of creating the act, which seeks to safeguard animals whether in domestic or commercial settings.

It also significantly increases fines and introduces jail sentences for cruelty to animals.

The Zoological Society reiterates its support to government in the continued improvement of legislation and procedures in the interest of animals and wildlife.
