The Caribbean Centre for Human Rights is calling on the Attorney General to follow through with a plan to release some prisoners to minimize the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak in T&T’s jails.
The organization says it has received information from the office of the Acting Prisons Commissioner that the persons identified in April for early release, are yet to be released.
It maintains that efforts to reduce the prison population are critical to minimize the risks of a COVID-19 outbreak to prisoners and the wider public.
It reminds that prisoners are particularly vulnerable due to their inability to social distance and limited access to health care or insufficient health care.
The organization also points out that this measure is being implemented globally and is based on World Health Organization and United Nations guidelines
