Suana Sookdeo vows to "advocate against domestic violence, and fight against injustice and inequality"

Community activist Suana Sookdeo from Chaguanas has been awarded the 2020/21 Makandal Daaga Scholarship in Law by UWI.

According to UWI St Augustine, Sookdeo is the second person ever to be awarded the scholarship since it was established in 2016.

Kareem Marcelle, an activist from Beetham Gardens who is also engaged in community outreach, was the first winner.

The purpose of the award is to develop lawyers who will be agents of positive social change in the Caribbean.

The university says Sookdeo is also poet and spoken word performer who advocates against gender-based violence.

She says she plans to use the scholarship to “help those that are less fortunate, to be their voice, to advocate against domestic violence, and fight against injustice and inequality in my society.”
