30 on Merikins land get power for the first time

30 homeowners at Samuel Cooper Road, Fifth Company, Moruga as of yesterday received an electricity connection for the first time.

This community is located on part of the land given to the Merikins, descendants of former slaves who were also African-American Marines, in the early 1800s.

The 211 thousand dollar project was part of T&TEC’s Electrification Programme, which assists low income households and communities to access an electricity supply.

T&TEC’s Chairman, Mr. Keith Sirju at a ceremony to mark the project, reminded all customers to pay their bill on time, stating the Commission has a very efficient disconnection system when payments are not forthcoming.
