$100K bail for prison officer on vehicle fraud charge

A prison officer, charged with fraud arising out of the sale of a vehicle, has been granted $100,000 bail.

Rio Claro resident, 24-year-old Ravindra Basant appeared before a justice of the peace and is due in court on December 14th, 2022.

His arrest followed investigations into reports about the sale of a Ford Ranger in 2020.

Police say the vehicle was initially bought by a suspect from a financial institution under a hire-purchase arrangement.

He then allegedly sold the van for $77,500 after leading the buyer to believe he had the authority to sell the vehicle.

The vehicle was subsequently repossessed by the institution and following investigations by the Fraud Squad, the accused was arrested and charged.
