Villagers, businesses come together to fix their own roads

Villagers, businesses come together to fix their own roads

Due to a lack of funding from Government, several villagers and businesses of Munroe Road and environs came together to repair deplorable road conditions in the area.

The ‘Community Project’ was led by Councillor for the Munroe Road/Caroni Savannah Road area Adrian Ali, after a significant cut in the funding being allocated from Government.

He says the 8 Councillors in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation was expected to share the $2.5 million being allocated for road repairs – but to date he says only $900,000 was received.

Based on this, Mr Ali says the community had no other choice but to repair some of the deplorable roads themselves.

Some of the roads that were repaired were Ackbar Road, Upper Assaraf Road, Kolahal Road Extension, and a portion of the Narsaloo Ramaya Marg.

The road works were carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and Mr Ali says they received reduced prices for use of the equipment from businesses in the area.

He says a number of businesses including Xtra Foods Grocery in Endeavour chipped in for the community initiative.

Councillor Ali says he although the community will push forward to repair other roads in the area, he is looking forward to next month’s Budget to see whether the required funds are allocated.
